Before we get into the review, I would like to say how much of a joy it is to be part of the Fresh Potatoes Club, and how excited I am to be a part of their future events. So our current event featured all of us posting a film review/recommendation for every year since 2000. I managed to get 2010, and no better film for me to recommend then Christopher Nolan's trippy heist film Inception.
Firstly, I want to state that I admire Christopher Nolan. Yes his films might be on the more overly complicated plot and audience hand-holding side, and some may consider him overrated, but I believe he is a great filmmaker who clearly oozes passion, which is showcased in his work. The plot to Inception is simple at first, but as the film progresses, the film get's darker and deeper, and a lot more complicated. That being said, I loved it. Definitely one of the more complex Nolan films, but if you allow the film to tell it's story, and you do your job to engage with it, it will be quite a thrilling ride and an unique experience. The direction is great and the performances help elevate the film's powerful writing.
The cinematography is brilliant, and the 'rotating hallway' sequence, remains one of my favorite sequences ever. I'm sure, most of you know that Christopher Nolan does not like to rely on CGI as much, so seeing how that sequence actually involved an actual rotating hallway, is pure dedication to me. The score by Hans Zimmer is legendary (as expected) and pure jaw dropping when matched with the film's excellent visuals.
This film remains my favorite film of 2010, and one you should check out if you haven't already. I'm sure some of you will be mentioning Satoshi Kon's Paprika, which I have seen pretty recently, and while there are many similarities between them, I wouldn't go as far as saying Inception is a rip-off of Paprika, or vice-versa. Let us appreciate these fantastic films that are both mind-blowing and original. Now 10 years later, His latest film Tenet will be releasing July (probably getting delayed) and I can’t find a better way to prepare yourself for that, then by watching Inception.
My rating: 9.5/10
