Review: Marriage Story

Directed by Noah Baumbach

Starring: Adam Driver and Scarlett Johannsonn

The plot follows a married couple (Johansson and Driver) going through a divorce.

The plot was simple as it followed the lives of a fallen out couple going through divorce. The writing was perfect by Noah Baumbach, who drove the film's tone which was both emotional and hauntingly realistic. The performances by Driver and Johansson were gripping and realistic, and kept me on the edge of my seat as I witness one verbal smack-down after another, which by the way are heartbreaking and realistic as hell. Supporting actors were also great, Laura Dern (who i don't get the hate for, she played her role perfectly, and looks like the top contender of the Best Supporting Actress Oscar), and Ray Liotta playing the opposing lawyers.

The cinematography is great, and showcases a contrast to the couple, especially with the theme of 'West vs East'. Whenever we see California and the wife, we see sunshine, and bright colors. Whenever we see New York and the husband, we see dark and gloomy colors. The music too was great and perfectly describes the tone of the film, as it is both beautiful and emotional.

In conclusion, a fantastic film that is hauntingly beautiful in a way, despite the ugliness in it's synopsis. A film that will send you into an emotional roller-coaster, that will hurt you, break you, make you smile, make you cry. Noah Baumbach crafts a fantastic film that delves into the ugliness of relatable situations that deal with divorce and heartbreak, one that is a serious contender at the Academy Awards.

In other things, I know I don't post much, but I am trying to get my top 10 films of 2019 in order, as well as review the films nominated for the Oscars in time. Just wanted to state that, thanks for reading, and looking forward to posting again soon.

My rating: 9.5/10
