Review: Mother! (2017)

Directed by Darren Aronofsky

Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem

The plot follows a young woman whose tranquil life with her husband at their country home is disrupted by the arrival of a mysterious couple.

Firstly, I want to say I am sorry for being out this long. Had a lot of work and exams to catch up on, and life was pretty stressful in general. Weeks back, I put up a poll for my what my next review should be, and the majority went to Mother! I wanted to see this film for a while, and I heard that it was pretty divisive, so I was pretty excited going in. After finally seeing it, I thought it was pretty good, but definitely not for everyone.

This is not your average horror/thriller film. The plot seems simple on the surface, but has a message that can be missed by some. The film honestly left an impression on me, and I felt so bad, angry, uncomfortable. I mean what would you do, if you were living a peaceful life, and then all these strangers come by and just mess up your life, steal and break your stuff? The acting was spot on by Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem who had really convincing performances. I honestly don't see how people think Lawrence was awful in this one, I thought she was pretty damn good. The film did well to slowly setup the plot, before it's wild climax that will leave you mesmerized. Darren Aronofsky is a controversial director, and this film is no different. There are moments that will anger you, disturb you, depress you, so this film is not for the faint-hearted. This film is one big allegory, and you'll notice it throughout the film, especially with multiple re-watches.

The cinematography was great, and if it was the film's intention to make me uncomfortable and claustrophobic with it's framing, then it did a brilliant job. The sound editing was great as well, making me go mad because of the loud, overlapping conversations. As for visual effect it was quite the contrary, with some of the CGI looking pretty bad and laughable.

In conclusion, it is a pretty good film with a very well developed message. I have to say again, that this film is not for everyone, and some may not get the message or the film's intention, but then again, not everybody enjoy the same things. If you liked any of Darren Aronofsky's works, then you might like this one, so give it a watch if you haven't already.

My rating: 8.0/10
