Today, on the 22nd of June of 2019, for the 40th anniversary of the wide release of Alien, a community of movie lovers got together to review it for @movieloversmovieclub.
I love sci-fi. I love horror. When put together, they can make some great films. Take for example, John Carpenter's The Thing, or Cronenberg's The Fly. But these films arguably wouldn't exist today, if it wasn't for the original Alien. Alien is without a doubt, a significant film that has impacted the sub-genre of sci-fi horror since it's release back in 1979. After re-watching it, I can say that it is phenomenal and definitely still holds up till this day.
The plot is simple and effective. The first hour of the film, is mostly character development, which is great as you relate to them, and actually care for their well-being. The real horror starts after the "that" unexpected moment. The film does really well after that first hour by displaying great tension and suspense, not knowing what's behind every corner. This was helped by the film's slow pacing, which felt right, as it relates to the feeling of being stuck in a small ship, in a vast empty void with an unknown creature lurking about, sends chills down my spine, and what makes it worse, is that every minute that they don't find it, it adapts, and it grows. The cast was great, and so was their chemistry, the big stand-out being Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley of course, who is nothing short of badass.
The visuals are excellent, and cinematography gorgeous. The Alien design was created by H.R Giger, and look great and not unnecessarily over the top. This was also back in the good old days, where the special effects were mostly practical, including a person in a suit portraying the Alien, and not this overuse of CGI stuff we see today. Speaking about practical effects, that chestburster scene still remains to be one of the best cinematic scenes in history, due to it's tension and unpredictability. The production design is incredible, and instantly immerses you within the Nostromo.
In conclusion, a suspenseful masterpiece whose legacy will forever influence sci-fi horror. A film that everybody must watch. Make sure to check out the other reviews with #movieloversmovieclub.
