Directed by Jay Roach

Starring: Mike Myers, Heather Graham, Seth Green

The plot is a parody of the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me(1977).

We in MovieLoversMovieClub, have decided to review the James Bond parody that is Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, due to it's 20th anniversary. After re-watching it, I can say that I didn't enjoy it as much as I did the first time watching it. If anything, I found it average to below average.

The plot is ridiculous, even for a parody's standard. The characters obviously are parodying James Bond villains to a certain extent, but are quite funny and innovative at the same time. Mike Myers does do a good job performing three roles, as Austin Powers, Mr. Evil, and Fat Bastard. With the writing and humor, some jokes are funny, but many are over the top, and unnecessarily went on for too long. In the end, it's supposed to be a lighthearted film, where the plot doesn't need to make sense, and it's only duty to it's audience is to entertain them, and that it did not do as much (at least to me personally). It's disappointing, because I remembered this film to be really funny when I was a kid. Maybe I grew up, maybe the film didn't age well, or maybe I just grew tired of parody films.

In conclusion, a disappointing sequel to the decent original. I like to believe that this film is only good when nostalgia allows it to be, but other than that it is extremely dated and obnoxiously unfunny at times. Funny enough that I prefer Goldmember over this film as well. If you are a fan of parodies, I guess I can recommend it. Other than that, it felt like a chore to re-watch this one.
