Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck
Starring: Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson
Set in 1995, the plot follows Danvers (Larson) as she becomes Captain Marvel after the Earth is caught in the center of a galactic conflict between two alien worlds.
Before I go into the review, I know that this film is receiving a lot of trolling and criticism due to it's feminist theme and messages. I for one will definitely not use this to judge the film, and trust me I will never stoop that low to do so ever. That being said, Captain Marvel was really average.
Don't get me wrong, it was entertaining to an extent. It's just I grew tired of the same typical superhero film formula. The plot was basic, and not really that interesting. I thought some of the characters were forgettable, especially the predictable villain. Brie Larson, was a decision I kind of was unsure about. She was alright, but she really lacked emotion throughout the film. Oh yeah her one liners were executed poorly. Really disappointing, but it's an origin story, and I am pretty sure they will develop her with the future Marvel films, or Captain Marvel films. Samuel L. Jackson is probably the best part of the film for me. That man is just funny, and he's probably the film's saving grace. Oh yeah the cat was also great too.
The cinematography was alright, nothing really special. The music sounded generic and nothing special either. The special effects were great, and I loved it's use in the impressive fight scenes. There was a point in the film, where the mix of the sound, music, and the special effects looked and sounded like Star Wars, so that's something. The film does well in production design, with it's 90's USA (RIP Blockbuster), and it's immersive environment, from ship interiors, to atmospheric planets.
In conclusion, The film does visually well, but disappointing substance wise. A forgettable origin film, but one that is needed before heading into Avengers: End Game next month.
My rating: 7.0/10
