Directed by Quentin Tarantino
Starring: John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, Uma Thurman
The plot is told out of chronological order and follows three main interrelated stories: Mob contract killer Vincent Vega is the protagonist of the first story, prizefighter Butch Coolidge is the protagonist of the second, and Vincent's partner Jules Winnfield is the protagonist of the third.
New year, new movies to recommend. Starting this year off, I decided I wanted to recommend one of my favorite movies from one of my favorite directors. With Quentin Tarantino filming his ninth film set to release later this year, I believe it's fair to start off with one of his best, Pulp Fiction.
The plot is told out of chronological order, and its up to the audience to interpret and order the events. This already is unique, and similar to Memento in its story telling style (minus the two different presentation sequences and amnesia plot). Characters are extremely unique and are written well, but when it's a film by Tarantino, you already expect this and don't accept anything less. John Travolta was good, Samuel L. Jackson was fantastic, and Bruce Willis was great back in his prime. The dialogue is brilliant and well written, that's the usual when it's written by Quentin Tarantino, who is known for his brilliant and innovative screenplays and dialogue.
Let's talk about it visually. Well visually its good, nothing special but great nonetheless. Cinematography is done greatly by Andrzej Sekuła. Film is brilliantly edited and pacing is smooth. As I mentioned, the stronger features of the film lies in it's screenplay and characters.
The film has been nominated for 26 accolades winning 8, one Oscar (Best Original Screenplay), two BAFTA's (Best Supporting Actor, and Best Original Score), the Palme d'Or at Cannes, 1 Golden Globe (Best Screenplay), and 3 National Society of Film Critics Awards (Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay). the film can also be analyzed with it's many noticeable motifs, such as the mysterious briefcase that Travolta and Jackson retrieved.
In conclusion, if you haven't seen Pulp Fiction yet, then what are you really waiting for? it's definitely one of his best, if not already his best film. The plot is engaging and entertaining and it's dialogue both powerful and memorable. A film that will last in history, and has an impacting legacy on film and pop culture. A masterpiece.
My rating: 10/10
