Directed by Stanley Kubrick
Starring: Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood
The plot follows the story of the Black Monolith, humanity's evolution and the rise of A.I.'s ultimate supercomputer HAL 9000.
50 years ago, one movie changed all movies forever. One of Kubrick's greatest, if not already his greatest. Widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, with it's influence leaving it's mark on many alike. This is 2001: A Space Odyssey.
The acting was incredible, everyone was great, especially that of Douglas Rain (who sadly passed away recently) who voiced HAL 9000. HAL 9000 is considered to be one of the greatest film villains of all time, and his sudden malfunction is frightening as he isn't like other movie villains, he is rational. Stanley Kubrick was involved in nearly every aspect of the production, which showcases how he strives to be a perfectionist and to make sure everything is up to his expectations.
The cinematography is brilliant, and every shot in the film is gorgeous. the production and costume design was fantastic. The visual effects were really good for it's time and is still impressive to look when re-watching it. The music was great and perfectly placed, especially with it's use of classical music.
The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, winning only 1 (Best Visual Effects. A sequel was spawned in 1984, which wasn't as successful. Christopher Nolan, one of the directors who was inspired by the film, helped restore the 70mm cut of the film and showcased it during Cannes film festival for it's 50th anniversary.
In conclusion, The film did receive critical opinion upon release, but just like the Shining, that soon faded and the film was considered one of the greatest and influential films of all time. Kubrick directed a gem of a film, one that will truly stand the test of time. It's extraordinary and it won't be forgotten anytime soon.
