Directed by Aneesh Chaganty
Starring: John Cho
The story follows a father trying to find his missing 16-year-old daughter.
Saw this film on the "coming soon" tab and honestly didn't think much of it, until I had the opportunity to see it this morning. It went from a movie that I thought was "meh", to one of the best films I've seen this year.
The idea was executed perfectly, with the set focusing entirely on smartphones and computer screens. It's been done before, with movies such as Unfriended, but this one felt different, this one felt unique, and of course was received better. The storytelling and the pacing was great, and the film itself packs an emotional punch to the audience with it's thrilling moments.
The film did well to bring attention to the potential horrors of technology and the world-wide-web, and the film felt refreshing as a new original twist to thriller films. John Cho's performance was powerful with his character going through different stages of fear and panic as he tries to find out where his daughter is. The music and the direction were good, as well as the humor in certain parts which was not overused or forced.
In conclusion, a unique powerful psychological thriller showcased brilliantly through it's visual presentation with technology such as computers and smartphones. Highly recommended, and a fantastic feature debut to director Aneesh Chaganty.
My rating: 8.0/10
