Directed by Corin Hardy

Starring: Demián Bichir, Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet

The plot follows a priest and a Catholic novitiate, as they uncover an unholy secret in 1952 Romania.

I went to see this film on day one, and if you saw my Instagram live thoughts after the film, you will know I am highly disappointed. Note, I wasn't particularly hyped to see this film, but liking the Conjuring 1 and 2, I decided to see how this ties back into the franchise. This movie is the latest sign that the cinematic universe is deteriorating.

There aren't many pros. The mood is set correctly with the dark and creepy atmosphere surrounding the environment of the abbey. The production set looks good, as well as the music. The sad thing, was the first 5-10 minutes of the film felt great, kept us clinging to our chairs, and kept the suspense and tension in the theater room which made everyone feel uncomfortable.

The acting was average, and in certain points made me feel like I was watching a cheesy comedy/superhero movie. The overuse of jump-scares ruins all the tension that the movie has promised, and instead of focusing on the atmosphere, you will be wondering when the next jump-scares is. Although the background story of Valak was interesting, the rest of the story was poor and predictable.

SPOILERS BELOW (Skip paragraph below if you do not want to be spoiled)

Some of the scenes were ridiculous, one scene especially was the backstory being told about the rift being opened by a sacrifice. That whole snake coming out of the rift, and how they closed it up with blood felt something out of a cheesy fantasy movie, I literally felt I was watching a comic book movie. The only scene that I actually liked besides the beginning, was the last scene which wasn't even a scene from the movie, but from the Conjuring 1 and 2 which I liked. That tie in the end, was good, too bad the whole movie wasn't.

In conclusion, while it was scary, it wasn't necessarily good. I really hope James Wan returns to direct the Conjuring 3, since he looks like he is the only one who knows how to direct a proper horror movie in this universe. Really below average film, and I am really disappointed considering it has to be linked to a good movie like the Conjuring. This movie really made me appreciate how good of a horror movie Hereditary is.

My rating: 5.5/10
