Directed by Christopher Nolan
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway.
the film follows a group of astronauts who travel through a wormhole in search of a new home for humanity.
I don't often like space exploration movies, but knowing Christopher Nolan, one of the greatest directors of modern-day cinema was directing it, I had to watch it. Some of you may or may not know that I have purchased the Nolan Collection on 4K Blu-ray. I recently revisited this masterpiece for the 4th time, and it still just as good.
Where do I even start? The brilliant acting by McConaughey and co, as they explore the deep endless space around them. Cooper's (McConaughey) connection to his daughter Murph, was a big key point in the film, as they have this very clear bond, and this bond is put in jeopardy as he was willing to sacrifice his well being to partake in a mission that he may never come back from, to save his family from disaster. The writing (done by Jonathan Nolan and Christopher Nolan) was good, and I will confess that this is one of the few movies I got emotional in. While the plot might be complex and not as straight forward as you think, it is however not to say horrible. The movie requires a focused and a open mind to understand the imagery and the connections to each developed subplot, and that may take multiple viewings to fully understand, but trust me, you'll want to watch it multiple times anyway from how good it is (even though the film is almost 3 hours long!).
The visual and audio presentation of the movie was fantastic. Nolan is known to be that kind of director who prefers the more traditional no CGI, no green screen, kind of route (which I prefer) Well Nolan had to use some CGI and some green screen, but the majority of the film was shot in production sets, which is impressive once you have seen the scenes in certain planets which gives such an atmospheric feel. Props to cinematographer, Hoyte van Hoytema for shooting this beautiful film as well. The music which was composed by legendary composer Hans Zimmer (Who has worked on projects with Nolan before), was outstanding, giving goosebumps to any audience watching the scenes alongside the tension that the movie pumps out (Especially the organs in the track 'No Time for Caution').
The only issue to some audiences/viewers, is the scientific accuracy of the film. While some of it's concepts may be real, like the wormhole or the black-hole, most of the film can be considered fiction, and I mean, to be honest, scientific accuracy isn't what I'm going to judge this movie on, it's not like it was based on a true story or anything.
The movie got nominated for 5 Academy Awards and won 1 (Visual Effects), the nominations include Best Original Music Score, Best Production Design, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing.
I 100% recommend this film. I think it will stand the test of time for it's exemplary presentation, and complex story-line. Definitely one of, or if not, the best Nolan film to date.
My rating: 9.5/10
