Directed by: John Krasinski

Starring: Emily Blunt, John Krasinski

The plot involves a family who must silently navigate their lives after being threatened by mysterious creatures who hunt by sound.

Here it is, a review I've been waiting months to write. After being released recently on Blu-ray, I've finally seen the movie I've been hyping to watch since it's cinematic release back in April. In short, it was very very good.

John Krasinski did a impressive job as director of this film, and also writing it, as it does have us emotionally connect with the characters in the film. One thing I did like about the film, was the lack of dialogue in the film. This showcased the silence that the family had to endure to survive all those years in isolation. As a horror fan, I am quite happy to see movies of this original quality being produced, as well as it's original screenplay, instead of using the "Hollywood" technique and pumping out adaptations and sequels. Another thing the movie did was rely on atmosphere and silence to scare the audience, instead of the heavy cheap jump scares that most horror films rely on. Another technique the film used was the use of sign language, this can be reasoned with the idea of the not being able to make sound, and also communicating with Krasinski's daughter in the film who is deaf.

The sound design in the film is great, and so is the cinematography by Charlotte Bruus Christensen, who did a fantastic job highlighting the scenes within a dark and gloomy atmosphere. The actors did a tremendous job, Blunt and Krasinski highlight the importance of family and what it means to protect them.

This film shows us the harsh reality of living in a post-apocalyptic society in which silence is essential. It is a defying 90 minute thriller, that will keep you on the edge of your seat. One of the highlights of Krasinski's directing/acting career, and I can't wait to see what he has in store for us next.

8.5/10
