Directed by George Miller
Starring: Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron
The story follows Max Rockatansky (Hardy) who joins forces with Imperator Furiosa (Theron) to escape from cult leader Immortan Joe. The film is set in a post apocalyptic desert wasteland, where resources are scarce and are in high demand.
Background information for the movie. this is the fourth installment in the Mad Max franchise, (which had Mel Gibson play the role of Mad Max). This however, was a reboot to the franchise. the film was in development hell since 1997, but after numerous attempts to revive it, it was finally complete in 2013 and premiered in 2015.
This will forever be the movie that has completely elapsed my expectations. Seeing the trailer play, I was not hopeful for this movie, instead I felt it would completely bomb both critically and financially. Then came the time I watched it, after many of my friends insisted I should. Oh how I was so wrong.
The movie kept me clinging to my seat from beginning to the end. its fast paced action scenes and chase scenes were phenomenal and impressive since most of it was shot practically and there wasn't much use of CGI (Which I honestly prefer it to be).
The camera angles were good, keeping us close to the action, and when there was use of CGI, it wasn't exaggerated and was used quite well, such as the sandstorm scene. The cinematography done by John Seale, was excellent keeping the orange color the main focus to the survival they have to endure in this endless desert, which is the essential theme of the film. The night time portion of the film was also done well, keeping it blue and dark to the viewers, displaying the cold side of the desert.
The music, done well by musician Junkie XL, fit the movie immersing us into the adrenaline rushing action scenes that the movie possesses. The acting was done well by both Hardy, Theron and Co. the action choreography was also very good which made it both very good and satisfying to watch.
I guess my only problem with the film, is Max. While he did well in the film, the only problem in the film I have is his dialogue. its not the the way the dialogue was written, it was the lack of it. While I was impressed with Theron's performance as Furiosa, the movie felt more focused towards her character instead of the character the movie was named after. Max had barely any lines in the film, and upon researching I found out that he only had 63 lines in the whole film (Which had a run time of 120 minutes), this really disappointed me.
This film is guaranteed worth watching. With over 10 Academy Award nominations and winning 6, I can definitely say that this film definitely proved me wrong, and made me believe in the words that "you can't judge a book by it's cover".
My rating: 9/10
