Directed by Joe Wright

Starring: Gary Oldman

This film is based on Winston Churchill’s reign as Prime Minister during the Dunkirk evacuation in World War II.

I was hyped to see this movie when it was announced back in early 2016. When it was announced Gary Oldman would be playing Winston, I was intrigued, since the promotional picture did not look like Oldman at all. I had the chance to see the movie and I have to say, I was very satisfied.

The movie did not lack in anything, as each character was influential on the screen. It showed us the horrors of war, and the tough campaign Churchill had to endure during the beginning periods of his reign as Prime Minister and during World War II. The soundtrack was brilliant and the screenplay was marvelous as well as its production design showcasing the struggle in late 1930’s and early 1940’s England.

What made it for me, was Gary Oldman. His performance as Churchill did not just live up to expectations. He talked, moved, and sounded like him. it felt like he WAS Winston Churchill. With over 200 hours of makeup and a ton of cigars, he was able to portray the perfect Winston Churchill in cinema history. With Oldman’s Oscar nomination for Best Actor, I can say it was honorably deserved.

My rating: 8.0/10
